I first contacted Milicent Armstrong, owner and designer behind Artemis Design Co. about 6 months ago asking her if she’d enjoy collaborating on a new leather camera strap for fall 2016. (A couple of days later she wrote back) She enthusiastically agreed.
Artemis Design Co. is a lifestyle brand that is well-known for their beautiful ‘magic carpet loafers’ but also for their well-made travel goods that incorporate beautiful antique Kilims and Soumak fabrics sourced from Turkey and made in Morocco. The first time I saw the textiles she carried and the lifestyle of her brand, I knew we needed to collaborate.
It was difficult to pick just one textile from the many she carried but after some deliberation we both decided on a colorful and vibrant Soumak textile for Fall 2016. The Soumak came in a large carpet format and once it arrived it was so beautiful I almost didn’t have the heart to cut this beautiful rug. Yet, it’s amazing how something can be made for one use and then reused and redesigned to bring it a new life. From this beautiful Soumak and our high quality vegetable tanned leather, we created The Artemis.
What is Soumak?
Soumak also spelled (Soumakh, sumac and Sumac) is a tapestry technique of weaving strong and decorative textiles to be used as rugs and domestic bags. Soumak is a type of flat weave, somewhat resembling but stronger and thicker than kilim, with a smooth front face and a ragged back, where kilim is smooth both sides. Soumak lacks the slits characteristic of kilim, as it is usually woven with supplementary weft threads as a continuous support.
